Haven't been on this journal in a couple of years now. Moved over to DW because of the security concerns on LJ, but still it's nice to come over and see people.
Micro-summary: All well here, but concerned about upcoming election. Also good to see everyone here, I'll read your journals and catch up a bit on your lives. I miss you and hope you'll stop by DW sometime.

I keep thinking it would be amazing to retire in a place like Tennessee. Beautiful mountains, nice people, lots of things to do. Then I see articles like this:

Doing pretty well here at Arisia overall. Decided to fly out to Boston on Friday, got in with no real problems, grabbed some people, and had a dinner at Addidis Red Sea Ethiopian that could not be beat. Hotel room is a bit noisy, but worse things have happened, I think I have barbarians next door.
Today I learned that an Ex GF of mine has breast cancer, which is really sad and hit me rather hard to be honest. We didn't part on great terms, but that doesn't change the fact that I do/did care about her, and I've been glad that she has had a good life since then. Actually it looks to be great from what little I have seen with a loving husband, amazing kid, and a good life lived.
But still it breaks my heart, there's no lines of communication, and I do hope she gets past this and lives a life well into old age...
Other things are good, I'm seeing people I haven't seen in years, going out to get good food, and now with the nightmare fake snow event my flight home has been cancelled and I have to stay here an additional day. I remember back in 2003 or so when I almost got stuck due to snow: I did a heroic effort and pushed through a foot of snow to the T station, then took that to South and caught an Amtrak Acela train that pushed through the snow like SnowPiercer. Because my wife needed me, the kids were driving her crazy, and I had to be able to get the snow out of the driveway.
Now? Kids are older, she's fine, and there really is no reason to go home, so why do it. I'll just hunker down here Sunday, catch a noon train out Monday and be home by 7pm. Much more civilized way to live and I get to sleep in late.
Times change. I need to change with them. I need to do more traveling and stop being so nailed down to the house. It's been 18 years or so, times have changed....

Kind of weird how it happens: Person you have known for years, watched raise kids, and all that, seems normal. Then you go away from LJ for a year, come back, and find a weird long rant about how you have to balance those vaxxers and antivaxxers because they all have good data.
You see the autism paragraphs, and you know this person went weird. You point out that using peer reviewed sources is best because you worked at Science for years and you know good and bad research. You point out that your kid picked up Pertussus from an antivaxxer and you don't like bad science...
And when you get a 10 paragraph response telling you you're wrong and all that and you can hear the virus in their mind talking you just go "Naah, not worth saving" and dump them.
Maybe as I get older I realize that some people really can't be reasoned with in a real world setting. They enjoy having their arguments in a fantasy bubble, with other people in a fantasy bubble, and if you're not in the bubble you're a problem.
So.... Fuck it. There are people now who have drifted to the point where rape is ok, and to be honest I find that deplorable. There are people who ignore science and play word games while kids get sick and die. I find that deplorable.
But I'm not wasting time on them anymore. The only thing that fixes this is personal experience and tragedy. Anything else is just feeding the beast.
So.... Good luck.

Class continues to kick my ass here. Long 8 weeks, who knows where this will end up. I hate management.
